Have you ever been in a place in your life when you were confused about a decision you needed to make?

When life seems to be pulling you in different directions?

This period can last weeks, months, years, even decades as you move through the motions of everyday life and put decisions that are difficult to  make on the back burner. Other times, life moves really fast right and decisions need to be made quickly and with a clean and grounded mind every day. The beauty of yoga, is that more so than any other physical practice, yoga helps with mental and spiritual clarity by assisting the decision making process through bringing union to your mind, body and soul.

Jeni James, a yoga student and entrepreneur was recently faced with a big decision in her life. Her story may help to illustrate the unseen forces that are often at work when we get onto the yoga mat…

I have been feeling lately like it is time for a change, a big change in my life. I\’m not sure what that means or where I would go, then a friend of mine and I go to lunch and he has a job opportunity for me. I think about it for a couple days and decide to check it out. Maybe this is the change I need? I apply and start interviewing and in the middle of the process, I find out…if I am offered the job and accept it, I would be moving to Connecticut! For the first three seconds…I think..NO WAY! My mind calms from the reaction and similar to being in yoga in an uncomfortable posture I consider…just consider the possibility.

I go to yoga that night. Each month at Full Moon a different chakra is discussed in depth. Tonight is the second chakra, the color is orange. It is located below the navel and is associated with our creativity, the center of our creation, physical, spiritual, inspirational, our divine creative energy. In the class, the instructor asks, \”what do you desire, what you want to create, what do you want?\”.

I go through the obvious…prosperity, a husband, a fun job, a healthy body, lot\’s of shoes, world peace, the ability to travel whenever and wherever I want.

She keeps asking \”what do you desire, what you want to create, what do you want?\”.

I move deeper into meditation as we settle into a deep hip opening pose, Supta Baddakonasana.

She says it again and again and again…\”what do you desire, what you want to create, what do you want?\” The tone is almost matter of fact, to suggest that we already know the answer.

And then I do.

Expansion…it comes like a whisper…expansion.

I desire expansion, I want to create expansion, I want to expand.

In the pose, I feel at ease with moving myself across the country, alone, to a state of four seasons, where I know no one…because I desire expansion….

I feel grateful to my journey on the mat for again and again it guides me to clarity in a gentle, loving way. This is a big decision, yes, but I have no doubt in my mind that it\’s the right path for me. Expansion…East Coast…Connecticut…and so another journey begins!

Strive For Harmony Through the Poses and Breaths

In this beautiful short story, Jeni demonstrates the power of the harmonizing effect that a yogic practice has on our minds, bodies and souls. In each movement of your yoga practice and with each breath, you are being led into a state of deep harmony. Harmony in your body, mind and with your soul is the foundation for clarity in life. Paramahansa Yogananda was an Indian Guru who brought Kriya yoga to the west. His philosophy on life and yoga reflects the wisdom found in this clarity. With yoga, we are not simply letting go of the tension in our bodies and minds, but instead, when we enter into such a deeply harmonizing activity, we come into alignment with our God-selves, our source of truth and realization of our purpose here on earth. Yogananda says,

“Self-realization is the knowing in all parts of body, mind, and soul that you are now in possession of the kingdom of God; that you do not have to pray that it come to you; that God’s omnipresence is your omnipresence; and that all that you need to do is improve your knowing.”

Expect An Answer or Solution

The clarity came for Jeni when she allowed herself to bring her body into harmony through the yoga pose and listened to her teacher, who expected an answer to the question, what do you desire? When we expect a solution to our problems  or when we are blessed to be in the company of another who expects an immediate answer or solution, it forces our minds to open and hold possibilities that we may not have let our minds fully embrace.

Listen to Your Body

The key to knowing that you have found clarity in your decision making is when you have a deep sense of peace and relaxation in your body. Decisions aligned with your highest self bring you into deeper harmony with all aspects of your being, while decisions not serving your highest self can leave you with a feeling of anxiety or tension in your body. Jeni\’s story is a perfect example, even though she was making a big decision, it felt right to her, she felt at ease and gratitude for how she had arrived at her decision.
